I’ve been reading a couple articles how young people are communicating less and less in real life and more on the computer. Since everyone is spending more time alone, they’re also hurting the music scene in a way. If you don’t hang out with your friends, you can’t be in a band.
However, there sure are allot of techno computer dance one man bands popping up on myspace. I think this kind of music is going to be the next big thing. Grunge, Punk, Pop, Pop Punk, Hardcore, and now Repetitive loops.
You know who had repetitive loops first? Nintendo.
I’m not sure what kind of program this people are using to make these songs, but I’ve been working on one. I call it “No Dankin’s Required”. Let me know what you think

Kid9
Published by December 19th, 2007 in Art, culture, street art, graffiti, Design, Underground and Artist. 0 CommentsI was snooping around myspace last night and stumbled upon Kid9. He instantly became one of my favorite artists. I really don’t know much about him other than he’s from Austrailia, and he’s awesome.
I found his website today, but it’s kind of disapointing. It’s set up like a blog which really limits the ammount of his work you can check out. But, I found him on some other sites like Red Bubble and Deviant Art. Your best bet still is myspace though, so if you got one, check him out.

How to win friends and influence people

My roommate has a computer printer just sitting in the hallway for quite some time so I decided to put it to use. Using Photoshop, I constructed a little 12 page book of artwork and made ten of them. Then using some gold paint I signed and numbered each one.
After all that, I stapled them together, and sent out a bulliten on myspace letting everyone know I have limited edition DIY art books and they’re free. One comes with each piece of artwork or print bought off my myspace or website. I was suprised at how high the demand was for these things. I recieve alot of messages about them, and already sent three off this morning.
I still have 6 left (I kept one for myself), so yea… www.myspace.com/huskydiver or www.mattgondek.com

Swoon
Published by November 7th, 2007 in Art, culture, street art, graffiti, Design, Underground and Artist. 1 Comment
Swoon is a New York based street artist. She works in giant prints of figures that are wheatpasted onto walls. She gets her name from a dream her ex-boyfriend had of him and her tagging and running from the cops, using the name “Swoon”.
Her artwork is made up of highly detailed drawings, often of family and friends, that are cut and hung. She’s been at it since 1999. In that short time, she has gained a loyal following from fans and major cultural institutions.
New Music November
Published by November 6th, 2007 in Art, Music, Underground, Rock and Punk. 3 CommentsI’ve recently found myself with alot of new music, so I thought I’d share my opinion on them. I mean, why not right?
Angels and Airwaves (I- Empire)
If you liked their last CD, chances are you’ll like this one, due to the fact that it sounds ALOT like the last one. Don’t get me wrong.. it’s good, but while listening, I forgot that it was a new CD. The first two tracks are killer, then it seems to drop after that. I wish Blink would come back
NOFX (They’ve actually gotten worse LIVE)
I was actually excited about this one, due to the fact that I like alot of their newer music. I’ve had their last three records, and was looking forward to getting a live CD from them. Well, the time finally rolled around, and out of the 20 or so tracks on it, maybe five of them are from these CDS. Most of it is really old stuff music that wasn’t played on their last live CD. The more popular songs off the last three records are not even on this thing. That’s NOFX for you though.
Foo Fighters (Echoes, Silence, Patience, and Grace)
Wow what a boring CD. When “There is Nothing Left to Lose” came out, Dave explained that alot of the songs on it were more mellow because they were getting older. Then, they released One by One and In Your Honor, which both crushed. It seemed like he was just joking and everyone was happy. Then, they have to go and release a live acoustic CD, and now THIS one which is more acoustic doldrum music. There are electric guitar rock songs on the album, but they seem rushed and thrown on to keep the drummer getting a paycheck.
The Killers (Sawdust)
A Collection of B- Sides and whatnot.
Daft Punk (Alive 2007)
I couldn’t believe it when I started listening to this…It’s a LIVE CD of a techno/dance band. The songs sound EXACTLY the same, except now there are people screaming in the background… wow..
Then again, what do I know. I’m no critic.
The Adventures of Matt Gondek, Freelance Artist II
Published by October 1st, 2007 in Uncategorized, Art, Cartoons, culture, exhibits, street art, graffiti, Community, Design, gallery, Underground, Artist and Creative Treehouse. 7 CommentsThis weekend I found myself once again at the Creative Treehouse for their second “24 Hour Creative Marathon”. A two day event in which artist’s have 24 hours (starting Friday night at 8PM) to create a piece to be shown and sold the following evening.
The theme this time, was lost and found. I opted to paint some monsters… shown below.

“They Don’t Make Ice Cream This Big”
Keeping with the theme of the show, I lost my duct tape, when someone stole it while I went to get something to eat. I also lost a dollar when the gyro shop ripped me off by overcharging me for one of their specials.
I did however find an amazing cheese tray which kept me happy during most of the event.
Low Ballin’…
Published by September 28th, 2007 in Art, culture, marketing, Community, Hillbillies, Design, gallery, Underground and Artist. 0 CommentsToday I got an e-mail from another Pittsburgh artist talking about collecting as many Pgh artists as possible and amassing their information on one site. Not a bad idea at all. One site with everyone’s contact information as well as samples of work seems like a good idea. I was excited to jump on board. Until I got to the guideline portion on the e-mail.
There was your standard rules, but one in particular stood out. It stated that “This site will not list artists who lowball their prices in order to sell in
volume, hobbyists, or those who do not know how to value their work, all of
which hurts the art community in general”.
When people write things like that, it makes me mad. I know that this sentence isn’t directed at me, but in a way, I feel that it is. I definately don’t charge alot for my work. I would make rather have my work in someone’s house, on their shirt, or in a shop than sitting in my house where no one is seeing it. How many times did you see a certain piece of art you really liked, only to get discouraged at it’s $500 price tag? Another reason I charge low is because, like 99% of the art world NO ONE KNOWS WHO I AM. I am not famous in any way. I can see jacking up the price on a piece by Crayola or Alex Pardee because they are amazing at what they do, and the demand for their work is high.
Listen. You want to know what hurts the art world? High priced, no name artwork. If EVERYONE didn’t charge so much, then ALOT more people would have artwork in their homes, where it could be appreciated. Not sitting in a closet of the artist’s home, waiting for the day when some asshole is going to pay 2 grand for a 6” by 6” piece of wood with some acrylic paint on it.
I get alot of freelance work. ALOT. And with each piece I make sure I’m not ripping them off. I do it for as low a price as possible, because I know they will tell their friends, who will also want something done. It’s called MARKETING. I can see where you get the argument of “well, people will pay high price for an original piece”. Maybe if those artists had more creativity, EVERY piece would be original.
I have no problem with big name artists w/ high prices, but c’mon people, don’t try to be something your not.
Dunny Series 4!
Published by September 27th, 2007 in Art, culture, street art, Advertising, Design, eBay, Underground, Artist, Kid Robot and Dunny. 1 CommentDunny Series 4 from Kid Robot comes out today at 11AM ET. If your not up to speed with Dunny, or are looking at the pic above and thinking “Those are gay” while you and your buddy are benchpressing, you better get with it real quick.
Dunnys are Kid Robot limited edition figures that are each done by a different artist. Each series sells out quick, due to high demand, amazing design, limited quantities, and the ever elusive “Chase Dunny”. Each dunny comes blind boxed, which means your not sure which one your getting until you actually buy and open the box they come in. The chase dunny is a extremely rare figure that is hard to obtain, and often go for hundreds of dollars on Ebay. The normal figures are each assigned a numerical value such as 2/25, which means, out of every 25 dunnys produced, they made 2 of this figure. Some are more rare than others, which is where the passion to collect comes in.
The line up of artists for series four are Frank Kozik, Jon Burgerman, MAD, Tara McPherson, Mad Barbarians, Shane Jessup, David Flores, KOA, Sket One, Gary Baseman, Michael Motorcycle, Joe Ledbetter, MIST, Nico Berry, Thomas Han and Mike ‘2600′ Davis of Twelve Car Pileup. Don’t sleep on this one. Get your dunnys now, because they sell out quick. I’m gonna go there now and get my credit card ready!
