Free punk show at bowling alley is a real “slam dunk”

bowling_girls.jpg
Two weeks ago when my band, Doughnuts in November, robbed a laundymat to help fund a bus trip to Vermont to see the 5th annual beard and moustache competition we never thought we would get caught.

Having pockets full of all those heavy quarters proved to be a bad idea as the police nabbed us only fifteen feet out of the door. Nothing says embarrising like having your pants fall down in front of a gang of old women and your hands cuffed behind your back.

Due to a loophole in the system however, we managed to get off with only 45 minutes of community service. We will all be serving our musical sentence tomorrow night, Friday the 4th at the Shefield Bowling Alley in Aliquippa PA. My band will preforming around 10:00PM in the eastern time zone. Come out and see 5 grown men in masks singing songs about fat girls and dinosaurs.

This is a link to my band Doughnuts In Novemeber’s new music video. The song is called ”Zombies Ate My Neighbors”.  A “B” Movie specialist was flown in from Sweden to direct and film it. Check it out!

Columbus Ohio is for Lovers

800px-the_hives.jpg
This past weekend my friends and I went on a roadtrip to Columbus Ohio. Our main reason for going there was to see The Hives perform at the Newport Music Hall, which is supposedly the oldest rock concert venue in the United States.

The Donnas opened for the Hives. They were pretty good. Nothing special. The lead singer tripped and almost fell during the second song and their drummer was hot as usual.

After that the Hives took the stage and put on an amazing show. They have amazing stage presence and can really work the crowd. Their entire hour plus set was fast paced and aggressive. I would definately go see them again.

After that, the group broke off into two groups. My group started walking the streets around the area looking for something to do. We wandered into a tiny little basement of a bar called Bernies. There was a band setting up their equipment in the corner. They consisted of 2 big fay guys dressed weird w/ glasses, and a skinny little guy on drums. They didn’t look like a real band, but when they started playing I was definately wrong. They were amazing. They had a real original thing going on for them, and they were hilarious too. The songs were about being gay, emo kids, and crack cocaine. On top of that they had lasers attached to their instruments. It was really fun to watch them. When they were done playing I bought their CD/DVD immediately. The band is called Downtown Brown. Check them out on myspace.

Other highlights of the trip included sleeping on an air mattress, seeing a BuffMonster wheatpaste downtown in Columbus, a metal porta-potty, and eating at the Noodle Factory.

Audio Num Nums (can anyone play the drums?)

In one of the most Boner inducing moves in quite a long time, Green Day has yet again released a brand new CD under a different name.

A few years back Green Day teamed up with Devo, and under the name “The Network”, released an entire album of skull crushers. This time around, it seems to be just them under the name “Foxboro Hot Tubs”.

Best of all, the 6 track EP can be downloaded entirely for free by going here:
http://www.foxborohottubs.com/noflash.html
If you try to visit the site without the noflash.html part, you’ll be stopped by a big stupid clock on the page. F that.

Anyways, go download them because Green Day is the shiz-nite!

P.s. I’m writing and uploading this from my new Ipod touch. This thing is seriously amazing!

New Albums of 08′

002.jpg
There are alot of new albums coming out next year, but only one you’ll need to care about. The band Doughnuts in November will be releasing their MUCH anticipated record here on American soil early next year. Up to this point, all their releases have only been available in their native land of Mexico. That all changed last month, when a merger between two of the biggest record companies in the business took place, allowing music from other countries into ours.

These actions did not come without sacrifices. Already losing two band members in the past, (Freddy Loser in a vicious knife fight outside a local club, and Dead End to malaria) Doughnuts in November had to be literally sneaked out of the country due to a public outcry of traitorism when they found out they were coming to America to record. The day before their 4 week burro ride across the border, the lead singer of DIN, Doug Dickens, almost was fatally wounded when an unknown assailant rigged his burrito with explosives. Fortunately, Doug was to busy pleasuring one of their numerous groupies and had skipped on lunch. The burrito detonated in his refridgerator and no one was injured. Another account saw their drummer, Astella Dios, with a three day hospital stay due to an attack from a moltov cocktail, which was dropped from a bridge while he was passing underneath in his camaro. The attacker was caught two days later by fellow band mates Finish Line and Maximum Buick, and was severly beaten. Courts ruled in DIN’s favor, and Finish and Maximum were let two with a paltry fine of 40 pesos and three hours of community service. The last, and most outrageous feat to stop the band was to their sole roadie, El Roadie Diablo Negro, from foreign dignitaries. While America and Mexico were discussing the merger, Europe, whom also wanted rights to DIN, invited El Roadie to an “all inclusive” vacation celebrating their success. However, upon arriving to Europe, El Roadie was quickly siezed and his four groupies (which is the standard number which accompany any member of DIN at all times) were shot on sight. Taken to a remote location, El Roadie was tortured within a mere fraction of his life for nearly four weeks for any information that would result in the inner colapse of the band. Standing fast, El Roadie endured hours of beatings, water torture, and starvation daily but never broke. He finally escaped after a clumsy guard forgot to re-tie one of his hands. El Roadie managed to untie himself and escape, but not before taking the lives of no less than 14 European guards, 3 horses, and 18 children.

Through much struggle comes much benifit however, as predictions claim that their album will be no doubt, the smash success of 2008 and possibly the first quarter of 2009. With a very grueling tour lined up of “at least 7 shows” next year, the album is expected to make the band 10’s of dollars. Stay tuned for further updates on the release of the album.

Make Money Online with Lead Singer Of Quiet Riot Found Dead

Las Vegas Metro Police have confirmed to TMZ that 52-year-old Kevin Dubrow, lead singer for 80’s metal band Quiet Riot, was found dead in his Las Vegas home. The cause of death right now is still unkown. Quiet Riot became famous for covering someone else’s song. Maybe he died from the shame of it all?

In other news, The Strokes continue to be the best band alive.

New Music November

I’ve recently found myself with alot of new music, so I thought I’d share my opinion on them. I mean, why not right?

Angels and Airwaves (I- Empire)
If you liked their last CD, chances are you’ll like this one, due to the fact that it sounds ALOT like the last one. Don’t get me wrong.. it’s good, but while listening, I forgot that it was a new CD. The first two tracks are killer, then it seems to drop after that. I wish Blink would come back :(

NOFX (They’ve actually gotten worse LIVE)
I was actually excited about this one, due to the fact that I like alot of their newer music. I’ve had their last three records, and was looking forward to getting a live CD from them. Well, the time finally rolled around, and out of the 20 or so tracks on it, maybe five of them are from these CDS. Most of it is really old stuff music that wasn’t played on their last live CD. The more popular songs off the last three records are not even on this thing. That’s NOFX for you though.

Foo Fighters (Echoes, Silence, Patience, and Grace)
Wow what a boring CD. When “There is Nothing Left to Lose” came out, Dave explained that alot of the songs on it were more mellow because they were getting older. Then, they released One by One and In Your Honor, which both crushed. It seemed like he was just joking and everyone was happy. Then, they have to go and release a live acoustic CD, and now THIS one which is more acoustic doldrum music. There are electric guitar rock songs on the album, but they seem rushed and thrown on to keep the drummer getting a paycheck.

The Killers (Sawdust)
A Collection of B- Sides and whatnot.

Daft Punk (Alive 2007)
I couldn’t believe it when I started listening to this…It’s a LIVE CD of a techno/dance band. The songs sound EXACTLY the same, except now there are people screaming in the background… wow..

Then again, what do I know. I’m no critic.

Random things from this past week

As I go about my week, alot of different ideas for blog posts pop into my head. Unfortunately, not all of them can be fleshed out into a complete post. Therefore, I just mushed them all together, and got away with not having an actual decent post today. Hooray!

untitled.bmpScientists found this new breed of delicious looking Jelly Fish 3 miles under the ocean! I’m no oceanologist, but it looks comprised of an upper level of grape jelly. From there, we see the body, which is most likely some sort of orange glazed crab meat flavor, with just a hint of butter. Add that whole taste sensation, coupled with those crazy chinese noodle things dangling off of it, and you got yourself on hell of a dinner! There is a store in my hometown that sells diving equipment… I plan to go this weekend.

On my drive to work today, there was a blind man walking down the street with a seeing eye dog. He was dressed in a full suit… but his tie was crooked. It was so sad and funny at the same time.

This is one of the two new shirt designs I did for the band “The Devil Wears Prada”. You can pick one up on their current tour with Chiodos… if you’re into that sort of thing.

All carrots were purple until the 17th century. Look it up

I have been working at my current job for 8 months, and every Thursday this one guy says to me “Is it Friday yet?”. Then he LAUGHS. Not conversational courtesy laugh like I have to do when he says it. This ol’ boy LAUGHS and LAUGHS and LAUGHS. He loves it. I want to be him.

Underground music is, in the easiest way to describe it, music by bands and artists that have yet to get famous and break into the mainstream. To most younger people, it’s considered cool to listen to only underground bands, and anything that plays on the radio is lame.

What most young people don’t understand is that most underground music has so much commercial backing now, that they are actually feeding the mainstream culture they are trying to avoid. All the major record labels have subsidiary labels that sponsor and fund “underground” bands. Now you can go into the mall and buy t-shirts from underground bands, and they are usually more readily available than a Godsmack or a Nickleback shirt. Selling and promoting “Underground” music is a GIGANTIC business. Isn’t the core ethics behind Underground D.I.Y. music about avoiding all the commercialism? I’m not saying that I don’t support this kind of music or these bands, because to me, I really like most of it. What I’m saying is that all these people need to wake up and realize that they are not being “punk” or “keeping it real”, because they’re not… Dawg.

If you break it down, there are four different kinds of music that young people listen to. They are Rap, Rock, Country, and Techno. Country and Techno suck, so let’s forget about them. That leaves the two major genres… rock and rap.

Rock bands’ songs are usually about how hard life is or about a girl they can’t have. To be famous in this genre, it’s important to be as good looking as possible. Look at Fallout Boy. I was once in a taco bell and overheard a fourteen or so year old girl say “When Pete (their bassist) came onstage, my vagina exploded”. It doesn’t matter what you wear. As long as your looking good wearing it. How many fat rock stars do you see on TV? Once your band makes it famous, your core audience will drop you because you’re a sell out.

Rap artists’ songs are usually about how easy life is or about having too many girls. To be famous in this genre, your personal looks are not important. Look at Ludicris. He’s about 90 pounds and most of it is his ears. Or Fat Joe..  It’s all about what you wear. Once you become famous, your core audience will still love you, and you will finally get the respect you deserve. Another perk about being a rapper, is that even after you die, you can still continue to release records from beyond the grave for years to come.

So, you have to decide for yourself, which is more important to me? An artist you can like now, and hope that they don’t get famous because you’ll have to listen to someone else, or an artist who is ugly but you can like forever?
