Kid9

308919-4-kid9-tako-thief.jpg

I was snooping around myspace last night and stumbled upon Kid9. He instantly became one of my favorite artists. I really don’t know much about him other than he’s from Austrailia, and he’s awesome.

I found his website today, but it’s kind of disapointing. It’s set up like a blog which really limits the ammount of his work you can check out. But, I found him on some other sites like Red Bubble and Deviant Art. Your best bet still is myspace though, so if you got one, check him out.

Swoon

450px-swoon.jpg
Swoon is a New York based street artist. She works in giant prints of figures that are wheatpasted onto walls. She gets her name from a dream her ex-boyfriend had of him and her tagging and running from the cops, using the name “Swoon”.

Her artwork is made up of highly detailed drawings, often of family and friends, that are cut and hung. She’s been at it since 1999. In that short time, she has gained a loyal following from fans and major cultural institutions.

The Adventures of Matt Gondek, Freelance Artist II

This weekend I found myself once again at the Creative Treehouse for their second “24 Hour Creative Marathon”. A two day event in which artist’s have 24 hours (starting Friday night at 8PM) to create a piece to be shown and sold the following evening.

The theme this time, was lost and found. I opted to paint some monsters… shown below.

“They Don’t Make Ice Cream This Big”

Keeping with the theme of the show, I lost my duct tape, when someone stole it while I went to get something to eat. I also lost a dollar when the gyro shop ripped me off by overcharging me for one of their specials.

I did however find an amazing cheese tray which kept me happy during most of the event.

Doughnuts and Art 2.0

The time has come. The Event of the Summer Season is fast approaching. Every day, it edges closer and closer, until finally engulfing every inch of your being. Drowning you in pure joy.

Of course I’m talking about Doughnuts and Art 2.0

MORE Artists, MORE Bands, MORE Dancing, MORE doughnuts than the original. All cram-packed into one monumental event with the low low price of $2. Where will you be Saturday night? One of the lucky ones? Or, will you be one of the countless faces awash with sorrow and grief, knowing that the one oppurtunity in your entire existance to feel what we call “love” has passed you by? A mere shell of your former self, forever searching for that feeling but knowing inside that you’ll never find it.

Musical performances by local hero Adam Rauf, the Legendary Pittsburgh dance machine PFunkt, the mexican sensation now ready to take over the United States “Doughnuts in November”, and the arena rocking, you probably heard them in the movie theatre or on Serious Satellite Radio, Ape Fight!

After you eyes and ears have overloaded on sensual ecstacy from the art and music performances, shake off those delectable doughnut calories at the end-cap of the evening. The mother lovin’ dance party hosted by Adammm vs. Sasquatch.

All this and so much more this Saturday night at the Creative Treehouse located conviently in Bellevue Pennsylvania. Doors at 6PM. $2 Admittance fee. 18+, BYOB (21+ to drink), lets all get drunk and have a good time.

How to Vandalize a Wall Correctly

wk12_4406.jpgSomeone recently got into an argument w/ me about the correct way to make a big ol’ batch of wheat paste. Here are the instructions below. Now you can whip up your own and plaster the town with your own terrible artwork!

Wheat paste

Prepare 1 cup (2.4 dl) of very hot water. Make a thin mixture of 3 tablespoons (45 ml) of white flour and cold water (just enough to wet all the flour and make it liquid enough to pour). Pour the cold mixture slowly into the hot water while stirring constantly. Bring to a boil. When it thickens, allow to cool. Smear on like any other glue. For slightly better strength, add 1 tablespoon (15 ml) of sugar after the glue is thickened. After using a portion, reheat the remaining in a covered jar or container to sterilize it for storage or keep refrigerated. If wheat flour is not available, other flours will work.

Let me know if you make some or any other crazy adventures with your pastey buddy, Wheat.

We Could Have Killed but we Created

wchkbc.jpg

Hey, check this out. My pal Rob has a show coming up very soon. Details below.

We Could Have Killed But Created

featuring new works by:

Mike Egan

Ben Kehoe

Rob Larson

@ Modern Formations Gallery 4919 Penn Avenue, Pennsylvania

Artwork by Ben Kehoe, Rob Larson, and Mike Egan.

Ben Kehoe (painting/illustration) paints with acrylic on wood while
staring at himself in the mirror flexing. This is how he generates
enough self-loathing to create. His paintings are influenced by
pattern based medieval art, nature and swift kicks.

Rob Larson (mixed media) creates images that combine photography,
stencil work, silk screening and lots of spray paint to create moody
urban scenes and illustrations that smell like Bullseye shellac.

Mike Egan (painting/illustration) uses a combination of acrylics and
shellac on wood panels and canvas. He paints portraits of devils,
skeletons and saints which are all greatly influenced by his work
within the funeral industry.

Opening Reception First Friday, July 6th, 7 p.m.

Doughnuts and Art 2.0

Doughnuts and Art 2.0 is taking place on August 25th, which is a Saturday.

It’s an event that showcases local artists, bands, DJ’s, as well as any other related business. It is once again taking place in Bellevue Pennsylvania at the Creative Treehouse.

At this time I am currently scouting for artists / magazines / organizations that are interested in being in the show.

If you are interested in participating in the show, please contact me
A.S.A.P. and let me know. You can e-mail me at gondek@mattgondek.com or leave a comment.

Zines and organizations are also allowed to set up space at this show to
promote their cause.

There is no fee to be in the show like last time. Also, all profits you
make at the show will once again go directly to you.

Other info like price of admission and whatnot are not set in stone at
this time. Like last time, please refer to www.doughnutsandart.com for all available information as it becomes available.

If you know anyone who’d be interesting in showing work or helping promote, please send them our way. Thanks

FLUX

img_0967.jpg

Flux is an art show that happens a couple times a year in Pittsburgh. This Flux took place on Smithfield Street downtown.  The bad part about the placement of this Flux was that about 200 feet down the road, Pittsburgh was holding thier annual gay and lesbian pride festival, and since there weren’t alot of signs indicating which one was which, you can guess where we accidently stumbled at first.

The cross dresser informed us that Flux was down the street alittle bit, so off we went. After the $10 entrance fee, we were well on our way to our art adventure. A short elevator ride later, and we found ourselves on the third floor of a building adorned with celophane wrapped around all the support beams blocking off certain areas and creating make-shift walls.
img_0974.jpg

Flux had alot of bands, artwork on display, and even fun stuff like this guy here painting a giant mural during the show. Some of the more notable acts we seen were a band called Ameoba Knieval, which was a band with a lead singer dressed up like you know who, and a DJ called PFunkt. PFunkt was amazing, and he alone was well worth the $10 entrance fee into the event. He sang songs about sexercise and well.. more songs about sex. Behind him was a giant video screen with videos that accompanied the songs he was singing. Watching him was a really good time.

img_0976.jpg

There were alot of people on the two floors the show took up, which made it very hot.  There were alot of volunteers working there, but for the most part, they just seemed to be getting in the way. All in all, it was a really great event, and definately better than the Three River’s Arts Festival which was held the same day.

We Hate Glue

winner.jpg

We Hate Glue, an art exhibit / contest in Barcelona Spain, has showcased over 250 submissions from around the world all centering on an arcade machine. Artists from all over sent their take on an oldschool arcade unit, and all 250 submissions can be viewed right on their website, which is http://www.marrsbar.net/. You’ll want to check out my buddy John Paul’s entries, which are toward the bottom of the list of entries. It was a pretty good idea for a show, and although the exhibit / contest is over, I’m glad they kept the template to make one on their site. I want to relieve my Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles 2 dreams from when I was a wee lad.
