Nitrocellulose Fun

eraser21.jpg

Last year around this time I decided that it was my mission to finally get into films and really start collecting DVD’s. After a few months of grabbing as many Criterion Collection, Masters Of Cinema, Kino Video, and classic releases I decided that I must find a way to see foreign films and older films on the big screen. While cruising the net I discovered the “Pittsburgh Filmmakers” and their two theaters in Pittsburgh. The Harris Theatre is located downtown on Liberty Avenue and the Regent Square Theatre is in Edgewood. The reason why I bring this up now is that I’ve noticed the quality of films being shown has increased dramatically in the past few months. Hitchcock, David Lynch, Fellini, and the best in Indie Cinema are on tap in January at both theaters. I’m very excited to finally see the Ian Curtis film entitled “Control” which tells of the tragic life of the Joy Division front-man and his sudden suicide. BTW: That pic is from Eraserhead.. maybe the craziest film of the 70’s which plays this weekend.

Make Money Online with my Friday Update$!

It’s Friday and that means I’m pilling up all the ideas I had for posts over the last week that didn’t flesh out! Enjoy

Check out the new Academy of Sciences building!
This $484 million dollar museum in California looks amazing. It opens up next fall, but until then, check out these photos and read about how great this place sounds.

The Arrival - A painting David Choquette. This thing is just creepy!

Here’s a story about how a teenage girl run up a $10,000 phone bill for text messaging! She was texting a 1-900 number where you could text chat back and forth with “cool guys”.

Just Britney <3

If you’re living in or loving LA and really want to take a dip into the Hollywood fishbowl in which she swims, pop into the World of Wonder Gallery for the “Just Britney” art opening, where Britney Spears-inspired work from more than 30 artists is on display. Included will be YouTube’s number one Britster fanatic, Chris Crocker, whose piece depicts Mr. Crocker himself perched seductively atop his memorabilia collection of The Brit. The show runs for two weeks, and yeah, it’s so over the top you’ve just gotta see it firsthand. www.myspace.com/just_britneyartshow

The Adventures of Matt Gondek, Freelance Artist II

This weekend I found myself once again at the Creative Treehouse for their second “24 Hour Creative Marathon”. A two day event in which artist’s have 24 hours (starting Friday night at 8PM) to create a piece to be shown and sold the following evening.

The theme this time, was lost and found. I opted to paint some monsters… shown below.

“They Don’t Make Ice Cream This Big”

Keeping with the theme of the show, I lost my duct tape, when someone stole it while I went to get something to eat. I also lost a dollar when the gyro shop ripped me off by overcharging me for one of their specials.

I did however find an amazing cheese tray which kept me happy during most of the event.

Doughnuts and Art 2.0: The Darling of Pittsburgh?

The Pittsbugh Post Gazette has declared Doughtnuts and Art 2.0 as one of the “Hot Things To Do This Weekend”, and quite frankly, I can’t blame them.

Sorry I have been talking about this event so much, but you know how you babble on and on about someone who you just fall in love with? It’s like that for me. Who needs a girl, when you got an EVENT.

Here’s the link to a Blurb in the Post Gazette

We’re also on the calendar of events in the City Paper as well. It seems no matter what paper you read in this city, you’re about to get a Doughnut wake up call right in your face!

 See you all Saturday <3

Doughnuts and Art 2.0

The time has come. The Event of the Summer Season is fast approaching. Every day, it edges closer and closer, until finally engulfing every inch of your being. Drowning you in pure joy.

Of course I’m talking about Doughnuts and Art 2.0

MORE Artists, MORE Bands, MORE Dancing, MORE doughnuts than the original. All cram-packed into one monumental event with the low low price of $2. Where will you be Saturday night? One of the lucky ones? Or, will you be one of the countless faces awash with sorrow and grief, knowing that the one oppurtunity in your entire existance to feel what we call “love” has passed you by? A mere shell of your former self, forever searching for that feeling but knowing inside that you’ll never find it.

Musical performances by local hero Adam Rauf, the Legendary Pittsburgh dance machine PFunkt, the mexican sensation now ready to take over the United States “Doughnuts in November”, and the arena rocking, you probably heard them in the movie theatre or on Serious Satellite Radio, Ape Fight!

After you eyes and ears have overloaded on sensual ecstacy from the art and music performances, shake off those delectable doughnut calories at the end-cap of the evening. The mother lovin’ dance party hosted by Adammm vs. Sasquatch.

All this and so much more this Saturday night at the Creative Treehouse located conviently in Bellevue Pennsylvania. Doors at 6PM. $2 Admittance fee. 18+, BYOB (21+ to drink), lets all get drunk and have a good time.

Cera[m!x] Pittsburgh and the NCECA Launch Reception

ceramix-pittsburgh.jpg

This morning I volunteered through Pittsburgh Cares at the NCECA Launch Reception (National Council on Education for the Ceramic Arts), working the registration table. Unique ceramic magnets made at the Bidwell Training Center, one of which is pictured above, were given out to the guests - which included Bill Strickland, the NCECA 2008 Conference keynote speaker and President & CEO of the Manchester Bidwell Corporation, Allegheny County Chief Executive Dan Onorato, regional arts organizations and educators, press from the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, WPXI, and WHIRL Magazine, to name a few of the 100+ in attendance.

The NCECA Launch Reception served as a precursor to Cera[m!x] Pittsburgh and the NCECA 2008 Conference, a “regional celebration of diverse expressions of contemporary ceramic art being developed by a consortium of arts organizations, artists, educators, universities, and exhibition venues to raise awareness of ceramic art in Western Pennsylvania.” The NCECA will hold its annual conference at the David Lawrence Convention Center from March 19-22, 2008 - which expects to bring 5,000+ to the Pittsburgh region.

Next week, I will be volunteering through Pittsburgh Cares for the MBC Administration Conference (also held at the Bidwell Training Center) and at the Oakland Furniture Sale. Please check out the Pittsburgh Cares website, and consider signing up for upcoming events on the Service Projects Calender. Volunteering provides the opportunity to improve the community, network, and share your ideas.

Southside Works Exposed

wow_000.jpgStarting tonight, and carrying on until Sunday night, Pittsburgh’s Southside is having it’s annual festival.

This year, they are having an event in the Southside Works. There will be local artists, musicians, food, and lots of other stuff going on. You can find more information at their website : www.southsideworks.com

I will there doing a mural in the afternoon, so be sure to stop by and see me! As of writing this, I still don’t know what I’ll be doing, so it should be pretty interesting…

The Washington D.C. History Museum

Below are some photos I took while I was at the History Museum in Washinton DC. They had a large variety of dinosaur bones, gems, and animals.

Right outside of the musuem, you have the option to purchase everyone’s favorite ice cream from the future, Dippin’ Dots. Behind the museum is a tent, where for three dollars, you can kiss women. As you can tell, you’re in for a fun filled day.

We Could Have Killed but we Created

wchkbc.jpg

Hey, check this out. My pal Rob has a show coming up very soon. Details below.

We Could Have Killed But Created

featuring new works by:

Mike Egan

Ben Kehoe

Rob Larson

@ Modern Formations Gallery 4919 Penn Avenue, Pennsylvania

Artwork by Ben Kehoe, Rob Larson, and Mike Egan.

Ben Kehoe (painting/illustration) paints with acrylic on wood while
staring at himself in the mirror flexing. This is how he generates
enough self-loathing to create. His paintings are influenced by
pattern based medieval art, nature and swift kicks.

Rob Larson (mixed media) creates images that combine photography,
stencil work, silk screening and lots of spray paint to create moody
urban scenes and illustrations that smell like Bullseye shellac.

Mike Egan (painting/illustration) uses a combination of acrylics and
shellac on wood panels and canvas. He paints portraits of devils,
skeletons and saints which are all greatly influenced by his work
within the funeral industry.

Opening Reception First Friday, July 6th, 7 p.m.
