I dropped off some paintings at a store that sells art last year. They had me sign a contract w/ them that seems pretty basic and layed out. My pants tightened at the thought of our smooth transaction and the newly aquired legal tenders I’d soon be getting dancing in my wallet. Their joyous float from my hand to the shopkeep as I exchanged them for goods and services was something I was quite looking forward to with deft anticipation.
A few months past. Thanksgiving… Christmas… and I never heard from them but never gave it more than a second thought as I tend to not distribute second thoughts so easily. It wasn’t until I was in the area last week dropping off some handmade comic book noise to the local stores that I noticed the store was now defunct. A big closed sign, flipping me the bird and booting my thin wallet right in the ass.
I snagged the contract and dailed the number on it. No answer. I left a message. No reply. I repeated this. Twice. Fuck. I am out two paintings.
The point is, before you sign something over to someone, be sure to have arrangements if something like this were to happen. Situations like they contact you if they’re going out of business, or if your item doesn’t sell. Don’t be a fool like Matt Gondek and leave your work to strangers with loose morals and sticky fingers.
The two paintings I left there retailed for around 180 million a piece, so I am out a considerable ammount of money.
How to make infinity friends on myspace
Published by April 17th, 2008 in Career, culture, zombies, marketing, Advertising, technology and computers. 7 CommentsRecently my roommmmmate allerted me about a whole online community of websites that allow you to cheat the system and aquire allot of myspace friends quickly.
Basically you go to one of these sites, punch in your myspace account ID to “log in”…. Then, you can send mass friend requests to a list of everyone else who is using the site at the same time. Each request you send earns you “points” which puts your account higher up the list. Thus, other people using the site will see you on this list and friend request you back.
Also, you can spend alittle cash to become a “VIP”. A VIP is always at the top of the list. In addition to this, other people are enticed to add you because you are worth more points. Sneaky sneaky.
At first I was pretty gosh-darned excited about this. I make a majority of my income off myspace and thought that this was a way to increase that ammout like whoa. Then I started thinking about what I was doing.
The people on this site are just trying to boost their number of friends. They’re going to add you and probably never even look at your account. If no one looks at your account, then no one is going to buy any artwork, or order a T Shirt. Sure, it looks great to potential clients to see you have a giant ammount of friends, but in the long run, all these people would have never even visited your account. They’re like “junk friends”.
My roommate brought up a valid argument however. If you have 30,000 myspace friends and you send out a bulliten, at least 100 of those people will look at it. If you’re using these bullitens to allert them of a new product you have, maybe one or two of them will buy it.
I’m still pretty torn on this matter. I don’t know if I want to devote the time to adding tons and tons of “junk friends” just to boost my numbers.
What do you think about this ?? Comments are appreciated.
Handbook for Pricing and Ethical Guidelines
Published by March 31st, 2008 in Career, zombies, Design, books, advice and money. 2 CommentsOver the weekend I picked up this book shown above. It offers allot of help for designers on how to price their services. Their is also allot of other interesting information and resources like help writing a contract which is mega vital in life.
Some of the prices they suggest seem like they’re geared more towards old dudes who’ve been in the game for years and years, but it’s still nice to see how much one could and should make whoring out your drawing arm.
Check it out.
P.s. a shirt I made for TDWP is on the front page of merchnow.com ![]()
Throw some cash on it (Get mad good at Electronic Funds Transfer)
Published by March 12th, 2008 in Career, advice, facts and money. 2 Comments
Recently I did me some design work for a company overseas. Because they can’t mail me cash money American, and they don’t have a paypal they offered to do a Electronic Funds Transfer.
An electronic funds transfer is the fancy name of what you do every time you swipe your debit card at the store, except you’re not actually there to do any swiping.
The person giving you the funds will need your Bank Name, bank address, routing number, and account number.
The routing number and account number can be a confusing bitch. Here’s how to find them. Whip out one of your personal checks and check that bottom left corner. There will be three groups of numbers. The first group is your routing number, the second is your account number. The third is your check number.
Now, you may be thinking that if you give someone this info that they will be able to steal money out of your account. Not so. Think about it like this. Every time you use a check, the person you’re giving it to has that info. Every time you use your debit card, they also have your info. Frankie says relax. Maybe you should take his advice.
Anways, you hook them up w/ this info, and pretty soon you’ll be livin’ so large w/ all that extra green deposited directly into your account.
Word to your mother.

The artist known as Sighn has figured out how he is going to spend the rest of his life…. by hand cutting ONE MILLION tiny wooden “ITS OK” signs. Something like this is going to take the rest of his life, and is a punch in the face to attention deficit disorder. As of right now, each one is on sale for $20, but that price will probably rise over the years. Check it out before they steep.

AND IN OTHER NEWS…
This blog get likes one hundred billion hits a second every day, but I don’t see a dime from it. I know alot of old men have blogs and blog about how they tongue kiss other old men’s blogs to make money, but I just can’t seem to figure out how they do it. I’ve read…oh how I’ve read child, on how to make the sweet figures from blogging but it’s all foreign to me. Does anyone have any tips on how to do it? I am at a loss. The only thing I do, besides write amazing articles daily that make your funny bone get an erection, is go to www.pingoat.com after each post. There you can enter your site and it will “ping” (whatever that means) your site to drive visitors to it.
Any suggestions?

That’s cool.. what’s it about?
Published by December 6th, 2007 in Art, Gondek, Career, culture and Artist. 0 CommentsThe more and more I learn about the art world and how people percieve art, it seems the more and more I get confused.
When I was younger, I usually liked bands and certain songs because they “sounded cool” or I liked the hook of a certain song. As I get older though I’ve began to appreciate the meaning behind lyrics more so than the music itself.
There are alot of artists.. big names like Shepard Farley and Ron English whose paintings have a purpose and general themes. This back story on their work seems to entice people to follow their work and purchase it. They have something to talk about when they show off their piece.
On the other hand, alot of artists just make art that looks good. I don’t mean them any disrepect, but unless they outright told you it had a meaning, you would never know. Big names include Alex Pardee and Crayola. Then again, their art is so good that the wow factor is decent enough that no back stroy is needed.
Here’s where I get confused. Up to this point, alot of work I made is just made because some random thing popped in my head and I decided to let it out somehow. People will look at it and sometimes ask me about it, only for me to have no response as to why I made it. Sometimes I think that if I only created work that had meaning, that it would be more accessable to people.
Then again, if I or anyone were to begin anew w/ one purpose to their art, there is always the fear of feeling pigeon-holed. In the future I (they) might feel that some ideas will have to go on the way-side due to that it doens’t follow the theme. The argument to this is that with all your work following your theme, when you present yourself to others, you immediately have a jumping off point to the conversation when they ask about your work.

This is a link to an amazing collection of blog posts that should be read by anybody creative. It’s alittle long, and will probably eat up an hour of your time, but it honest and extremely informative. This guy really seems to know what he’s talking about and tell it exactly like it is. Some sample quotes are below..
A fancy tool just gives the second-rater one more pillar to hide behind. The price of being a sheep is BOREDOM, the price of being a wolf is LONLINESS The old ways are dead. And you need people around you who concur. That means hanging out more with the creative people, the freaks, the real visionaries, than you’re already doing. Thinking more about what their needs are, and responding accordingly. It doesn’t matter what industry we’re talking about- architecture, advertising, petrochemicals- they’re around, they’re easy enough to find if you make the effort, if you’ve got something worthwhile to offer in return. Avoid the dullards; avoid the folk who play it safe. They can’t help you any more. Their stability model no longer offers that much stability. They are extinct, they are extinction.
if you have the creative bug, it isn’t ever going to go away. I’d just get used to the idea of dealing with it
Working 7 Days a Week
Published by October 14th, 2007 in Fun, Career, Pittsburgh, Community, museum and Volunteer. 0 CommentsPerhaps avid echoflip.com readers have noticed my lack of posting. Allow me to explain - I work 7 days a week. During any given day, you can find me at my full-time job as a Bookseller at Half Price Books or working in catering at the Pittsburgh Zoo & PPG Aquarium, National Aviary, Carnegie Museum, Carnegie Mellon University, Carnegie Science Center, or Pittsburgh Marriott City Center, among other places.
Also, I’m currently planning a Halloween Party scheduled for Tuesday, October 30 - 10:00pm @ Peter’s Pub in Oakland. All proceeds will benefit the National Multiple Sclerosis Society as part of the U.G.L.Y. Bartender Contest. Come celebrate Devil’s Night and live the 7 Deadly Sins: lust, gluttony, envy, greed, pride, anger, and sloth. There will be FREE BEER and a $5 cover. More to follow on giveaways, etc.
Lastly, I just put in my application for a Board Member position with Pittsburgh Young Professionals (PYP) this week. If that works out, look for more posts concerning the organization, young professionals in Pittsburgh, and ongoing events.
Feel free to ask me about any of the above locations, businesses, nonprofits or event planning in general. If you encounter anyone who says there is nothing to do in Pittsburgh please direct them to this post or have them e-mail me at jvesci@gmail.com. I could easily fill up a social calendar for anyone in Pittsburgh who asks.
