Peace Out Stinkface

untitled.jpg
I thought of a great book idea for children. A corner of the market that is virtually untapped and just BEGGING for representation.

Urban youth with goofy nicknames that actually don’t like being called said nickname.

I present to you my book idea, called “Peace out Stinkface”.  It’s about a young boy who wants to leave his community because all his friends and family call him Stinkface. He doesn’t know it, but everyone calls him that affectionately. Ol’ Stinkface decides that he is going to run away due to the intense morose and turmoil he experiences daily, and lets some of his schoolyard chums know about his upcoming plans.

The chums devise a super sneaky going away party w/ balloons, cake, banners, and the finest tracks from the first Kris Kross album. When the party is sprung on Stinkface, he is taken back by the generousity and genuine sadness that his friends are dealing with due to his upcoming departure. This confuses him at first, but during the Kris Kross song “I missed the bus” he realizes that although he might have “a dumb ol’ nickname”, his friends and peers actually do care for him… even his teacher Mrs. Bucketbeard.

Stinkface realizes that moving away would be the wrong thing to do since he is already surrounded by people who admire and care for him. It’s a truly heartwarming tale that will teach the lads and lasses about the effects of namecalling, and also to put yourself in the shoes of the aggressor.

P.S. Yes this post’s artwork is a Matt Gondek original, thank you for asking.

Columbus Ohio is for Lovers

800px-the_hives.jpg
This past weekend my friends and I went on a roadtrip to Columbus Ohio. Our main reason for going there was to see The Hives perform at the Newport Music Hall, which is supposedly the oldest rock concert venue in the United States.

The Donnas opened for the Hives. They were pretty good. Nothing special. The lead singer tripped and almost fell during the second song and their drummer was hot as usual.

After that the Hives took the stage and put on an amazing show. They have amazing stage presence and can really work the crowd. Their entire hour plus set was fast paced and aggressive. I would definately go see them again.

After that, the group broke off into two groups. My group started walking the streets around the area looking for something to do. We wandered into a tiny little basement of a bar called Bernies. There was a band setting up their equipment in the corner. They consisted of 2 big fay guys dressed weird w/ glasses, and a skinny little guy on drums. They didn’t look like a real band, but when they started playing I was definately wrong. They were amazing. They had a real original thing going on for them, and they were hilarious too. The songs were about being gay, emo kids, and crack cocaine. On top of that they had lasers attached to their instruments. It was really fun to watch them. When they were done playing I bought their CD/DVD immediately. The band is called Downtown Brown. Check them out on myspace.

Other highlights of the trip included sleeping on an air mattress, seeing a BuffMonster wheatpaste downtown in Columbus, a metal porta-potty, and eating at the Noodle Factory.

Sicko

Last night, I watched a very interesting documentary about health care in America. This movie is called Sicko and it was produced by Michael Moore. All I have to say is WOW, everyone needs to see this movie whether you have health care or not.

In the movie, Michael Moore interviews different people who have either been denied medical care because they were uninsured or because their health insurance didn’t want to pay the money. At some points in this movie, I was almost in tears because it was just so sad to see people be denied cancer treatment or necessary surgeries because they couldnt pay for it or their insurance felt the treatments were “experimental” or”medically unnecessary”.

I learned alot about the American health care system and how corrupt it is. its run by the government, HMO’s were approved by Nixon and President Bush gets paid off by the drug companies so they can charge whatever they want for medications. The system is so bad that almost 50 million people are unsured. I cannot believe that this country would deny help to anyone who needs it. they even deny care to people who served during 9/11.

Either health care needs to be universal like in canada and france or the health care workers needs to come together and either have a strike against the health care businesses or the new president needs to come up w a new plan for REAL change, unlike G. W. Bush. This leads me to another reason why you need to watch the movie. They talk alot about Hillary Clinton and how she wanted to univeraslize health care when she was first lady. thats fine and dandy, but they also explain that she was another one of the gov’t figures who was PAID off by the health care system not to have it changed. That is something to think about since the elections are coming up… Obama anyone?

The movie explains that univeral health care really does work, they go to france and canada and talk to people who use the health care system. they get timely and effective health care; infact, the american health care sytem scares them, most of them are alfraid to come here in fear that they will get injured and be denied care while here.

Watch this movie! Also, if you have any health care stories about being denied and you would like to share, post em or email em to me!
